Medical assistance whilst travelling
Are you going on holiday? If so, it’s a good idea to prepare thoroughly. Make sure you have enough medication, a list of your medicines and the correct documents.
However, you may also fall ill or have an accident whilst travelling. On this page, you can find out where to go for medical assistance both at home and abroad.
Before departure
Before you set off on your journey, please check:
- Whether you have brought enough medication with you.
- Whether you are allowed to take your medicines with you to your destination.
- Whether you need an up-to-date list of your medications.
- Whether you need any vaccinations for your destination.
- Whether you are adequately insured for medical expenses abroad.
Need medical assistance whilst on holiday in the Netherlands?
Nobody likes to think about it, but you may need medical assistance even whilst on holiday. For example, because you fall ill, have an accident or are unsure whether you should see a doctor.

If you need medical assistance after consulting Thuisarts, you can visit a GP or an out-of-hours GP service near your holiday accommodation. You do not need to contact your own GP to do this.
Need medical assistance whilst on holiday abroad?
In the event of a medical emergency, you can seek help via:
- the reception at your hotel or campsite;
- your travel agency;
- your health insurer’s emergency call centre;
- your travel insurance’s emergency helpline.
They can tell you where to go for medical care and which telephone numbers you’ll need.
